Meet Steve Athawes:
I have three grown-up ‘children’ and three beautiful granddaughters and I live in Surrey with my wife Lynn who hates walking with a passion. We’ll be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary later this year and with one eye on retirement from my job as an estates operations manager at a major London hospital, we are now planning a possible relocation to the Rutland area in 2023.
Despite always being keen on the great outdoors, I only discovered long distance walking about ten years ago. In an effort to improve my health and fitness, I embarked on a number of 100km, 24-hour, charity endurance walks, including the London to Brighton, Thames Path, Isle of Wight, and South Coast challenges.
Having walked Wainwright’s fabulous ‘Coast to Coast’ route across England in 2015, I finally accomplished my own life-enhancing ‘End to End’ trek in 2017, fulfilling a 30-year ambition in the process. The story of those journeys, “Walking The Walk”, was published in 2020.
It is a pleasure and a privilege to be a member of an elite group of people who have had shared experiences which often can’t be adequately described, but which will remain with them as fond memories, and I relish the opportunity to assist in the completion of their own ‘end to end’ journeys as the Association Route advisor.
